How to add captions to Instagram Reels
You can turn on Instagram's own captions, type text onto the Reel yourself, or generate captions before you upload and burn them into the video. For Hindi, Hinglish and other Indian languages, the last option gives you the most control over spelling, script and style.
Why captions matter on Reels
A large share of Reels are watched with the sound off: on a commute, in a queue, late at night. Without captions, a talking Reel is just a face moving. With them, a viewer can follow the point in the first seconds and decide to keep watching.
Captions also help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, and anyone watching in a second language. For creators who speak Hinglish, they make sure the mix of Hindi and English comes across exactly as it was said.
Option 1: Instagram's own captions
Instagram can generate captions for some Reels automatically, and viewers can switch them on. It is quick and costs nothing, but you have little say over how they look, and accuracy varies with language, accents and background music. Check how they read for your language before relying on them.
Option 2: Type the text yourself
You can add text boxes in Instagram's editor and time each one by hand. It works for a Reel with a few lines, but it is slow for anything longer, and timing every phrase to speech by dragging handles is fiddly on a phone.
Option 3: Generate and burn in captions before uploading
Generate the captions from the speech, correct them, style them, and export a video with the captions drawn into the picture. Then upload that video as your Reel. The captions show for everyone, look the way you designed them, and stay put when the Reel is shared or downloaded.
- 1Open your portrait (9:16) video in a caption editor such as EasyCap and choose the spoken language, for example Hinglish.
- 2Read the transcript while it plays and fix names, slang and mixed-language words.
- 3Pick a caption style, then move the captions away from faces and from the bottom edge where Instagram's buttons sit.
- 4Export the MP4 to your phone and upload it to Instagram as a Reel.
Tip: Preview the final Reel in Instagram before posting. Its buttons and description cover parts of the frame, so check that no caption sits under them.
Which script to use for Hindi Reels
Many Hindi speakers read Hindi typed in English letters faster than Devanagari on a phone, because that is how they chat. Others prefer Devanagari. If your audience is mostly in one region, use what they write in. EasyCap lets you switch the same captions between Devanagari, Roman script and English.
Questions
Can I add captions to a Reel that is already posted?
Instagram's own captions can apply to a posted Reel, but you cannot burn new captions into it. To change the burned-in captions, edit the original video and post it again.
Do captions help Reels reach more people?
Captions help people follow a Reel without sound, which can keep them watching. They do not guarantee reach; the content still has to hold attention.
Can I caption a Reel in Tamil or Bengali?
Yes. EasyCap supports Tamil, Bengali and the other main Indian languages, each in its own script or in Roman letters.
